Gissa Bicalho turns acrylic into sculptural statement jewelry, cut and polished by hand in Belo Horizonte in bold, painterly colour.
Each piece is cut, sanded, glued and polished in layers until the acrylic takes on depth and shadow, and nothing is moulded, so no two come out exactly alike. The motifs make it: Brazilian birds, scarabs and shells, surreal hands, and flowers embroidered straight onto acrylic, finished with gold-tone metal, shell pearls or rhinestones.
Gissa Bicalho, a visual artist with a passion for accessories, built the label in Belo Horizonte around one material, acrylic, and brought in her husband, José Alberto Bicalho, a biologist with a gift for engineering each piece.
Every piece is drawn, cut and finished by hand in its own studio in small batches, and the label became known for oversized earrings, sculptural necklaces and surreal hand motifs in vivid colour.
From reviews and try-on videos, in our words.
Every piece is cut and polished by hand, so two of the same style can differ slightly in colour and finish; the brand treats that as part of the process, not a flaw.
It works in small quantities, so styles sell out and some are never made again.
Earrings lead, but it also makes chokers, pendants, brooches, bracelets and hand-cut acrylic bags, plus pieces with hand embroidery on acrylic.
Its site promises tracked delivery to the US but doesn't publish shipping costs or duties, so check the total at checkout.
