Nineties minimalism in sharp, deconstructed tailoring, the designer's-designer label everyone still quotes.
Think: Minimalist utilitarian, edgy, deconstructed basics.
The buy: the twisted jersey top
the twisted jersey top
Helmut Lang helped define nineties minimalism, and its sharp tailoring, fluid tops and utilitarian leather keep that clean, slightly severe edge.
The design language is reduction: precise cuts, a palette that leans black and white, and a utility streak running through moto-inspired leather, tailored wool and draped silk. Pieces are built on silhouette and proportion rather than decoration, so one sharp blazer or scarf-tied top carries a whole outfit, and the tailoring is cut to keep its line through a long day.
Nothing from Helmut Lang is on the site at the moment. We watch their sales — when one lands it shows up in Drops.

Something is nearly always marked down here, so there's no sale worth waiting for.
Helmut Langalmost always has something marked down — there's no point waiting for a sale. Markdowns usually top out around 40% off, and we've seen 60% off at the deepest.
Helmut Lang, a self-taught Austrian designer, began making clothes to measure in Vienna and launched his label in 1986, when he took it to Paris. Slim suits, denim and high-tech fabrics made it a byword for nineties minimalism.
He moved the house to New York in 1997, and in 1998 became the first designer to stream a show online. He left fashion in 2005 to make art; the label has carried on from New York since, revisiting the codes he set down.
