A little Victorian drama for modern life.
Romance has grown hardware. The pieces that work here do it by contradiction: AKNVAS runs a gunmetal front zip straight down a jacket of sheer Chantilly-style lace, ruffled stand collar and all, while Kim Shui builds a corset from gold floral brocade with boning channels and a qipao shoulder, then fastens a sheer silk organza dress with pankou frog knots so the closure carries the whole structure. Fleur du Mal presses rose jacquard into dark denim and bones it like underwear. Selkie argues from the other side, with cotton gauze ruched the full length of a mutton sleeve and basque waists that pinch before the hip ruffles release: the volume is engineered, not draped. Anna Sui weaves her baroque scrolls into the tapestry rather than printing them on it, which is why the mini skirt survives close inspection. The sheer lace bodysuits are where the idea thins out. LSF, ESTHÉ and Fleur du Mal each make a convincing one, and three is two too many; choose by what it does under trousers you already own. Beading splits the same way: Sarah's Bags counts its hand-work in hours of glass sun rays on velvet, Mango gets you fringe and a knotted tassel with less ceremony. Staud, Hill House and Sister Jane hold the quieter end, in beaded scallops, flocked peony brocade and ruffled plackets. Lace is fine. Lace with a zipper through it is the point.
