Shoes, bags and swimwear

Leather, suede, raffia and wood count as natural; PU, vegan leather and other plastics as synthetic. No score: almost every shoe and bag brand we carry works mainly in leather, and swimwear is almost always nylon or polyester with stretch.

The method

How Fiber Score works

We read the fabric composition each brand prints on its own product pages (“Shell: 52% linen, 48% viscose. Lining: 100% cupro”) and sort every fiber into one of three groups. Nothing is estimated or guessed: a piece counts only when its fabric is listed.

Natural: Cotton, linen, silk, wool, cashmere, alpaca, mohair, hemp, ramie, leather, raffia.
Plant-based: Viscose, rayon, modal, Tencel (lyocell), cupro, acetate. Made from wood pulp, not plastic, but chemically processed.
Synthetic: Polyester, nylon (polyamide), acrylic, PU and vegan leather, metallic yarns, and elastane.

Fiber Score = natural share + 65% of the plant-based share, out of 100. A 70% cotton, 30% polyester top adds 70 points of cotton and 30 of polyester, not one whole synthetic piece. The main fabric decides; linings, trims and soles don't move the score.

Coverage matters. Some brands only name the fabric when it's a selling point (“crafted from 100% silk”), which makes them look more natural than they are. So the pieces we read stand in for the pieces we couldn't, and a brand gets a score only when its fabric is listed on at least 60% of its range.

Leather. Leather is natural but isn't a fiber. A clothing brand whose pieces are at least half leather is listed as leather-led, with its mix and no score.

What this doesn't measure: how a fiber was grown, dyed or sewn, or who made it. Natural doesn't automatically mean better made. Jewelry, menswear and multi-brand stores are left out. Checked monthly; a brand's numbers change as its range does.

Natural fibers, explained

Which clothing brands use natural fibers?

Of the 174 clothing brands we could measure, 10 are natural-fiber led: at least 85% of the fabric in their pieces is natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk and wool. They are at the top of this page.

Which brands don’t use polyester?

4 of the clothing brands we measured are synthetic-free: essentially no polyester, nylon or acrylic, and little or no stretch. 26 keep synthetics to 10% of the fabric or less.

What is a Fiber Score?

A number from 0 to 100 for how much of a brand’s clothing is natural. Natural fibers count fully, plant-based fibers like viscose, Tencel and cupro count at 65%, and synthetics count as zero. It is measured from the fabric each brand lists on its own product pages.

Is viscose a natural fiber?

Not quite. Viscose, rayon, modal, Tencel (lyocell), cupro and acetate are made from wood pulp, so they are plant-based and not plastic, but they are chemically processed. We count them separately as plant-based.

Does leather count as a natural fiber?

Leather is a natural material, but it isn’t a fiber. Brands whose pieces are mostly leather are listed separately as leather-led, with their material mix and no Fiber Score. In a mostly fabric range, a leather jacket counts toward the natural share.

Why doesn’t every brand have a score?

A score needs the fabric listed on at least 60% of a brand’s pieces. Some brands only list fabric when it is a selling point, which would make them look more natural than they are, so we show those as a partial read without a score. Leather-led brands, jewelry, multi-brand stores and brands we couldn’t read are left out of the ranking.

How often is the Materials Index updated?

Every month. New pieces are read as brands add them, and pieces that leave a brand’s catalog drop out of its numbers.
