The Materials Index

Every design starts with a material choice. This is what 244 brands are made of, from natural fibers to performance synthetics, and what those materials do for the clothes.

The short version

01 · What fashion is made of

Cotton, viscose and polyester run through most labels. Silk is in one in seven.

How many brands build with each material, meaning it’s at least 10% of all the fabric in their pieces.

Share of the 172 clothing brands with enough fabric data where each material is at least 10% of all the fabric in their pieces. “Leads at” counts brands where it is the most-used fiber. Counted from each brand’s main fibers (up to four, each at least 3% of the fabric), so a material used in small amounts, like elastane, is undercounted. Materials in fewer than 3% of brands aren’t shown.

02 · Explore by material

What each material does, and who works in it

Every fabric is a trade-off between drape, structure, feel, care and price. These are the brands that use each one most.

03 · Material signatures

Every brand has a design signature. It has a material one, too.

When one fiber makes up most of a brand’s fabric, the signature names it: silk-led, cotton-led. Otherwise it lists the fibers the brand uses most, like cotton, cashmere and wool.

Beyond the fabric

Shoes, bags, swimwear and leather

Leather, suede, raffia and wood count as natural; PU, vegan leather and other plastics as synthetic. Swimwear is almost always nylon or polyester with stretch, because it has to be.

Shoes and bags

Leather-led clothing

At least half the material is leather. Leather is natural but isn’t a fiber, so these brands are described apart from the fiber lenses.

Data gaps

14 brands partly measured · 29 brands that don’t list their fabric

Partly measured

14 brands list the fabric on 40 to 59% of their pieces, so we show what we could read, without a signature.

The method

How we read it

We read the fabric composition each brand prints on its own product pages (“Shell: 52% linen, 48% viscose. Lining: 100% cupro”). Nothing is estimated. A fabric a brand names instead of listing (“vegan silk”) counts as the fibers its own fabric guide says it is, or not at all; it is never taken as silk. Shares are weighted by fabric, so a 70% cotton, 30% polyester dress counts as 70 points of cotton. Linings, trims and soles don't count.

A signature describes what a brand works in. It is not a grade of quality, craftsmanship or sustainability.

Natural
Cotton, linen, silk, wool, cashmere, alpaca, mohair, hemp, ramie, raffia, and leather, which is natural but not a fiber.
Plant-based
Viscose, rayon, modal, Tencel (lyocell), cupro, acetate. Made from wood pulp and chemically processed. In the chart and the signatures, viscose stands for all of them.
Synthetic
Polyester, nylon (polyamide), acrylic, PU and vegan leather, metallic yarns, and elastane.

Signatures. When one fiber is at least half the fabric and twice the next, the brand is led by it (“Silk-led”). Otherwise we name the fibers that make up at least 10% of it, natural first, then plant-based, then synthetic. Cotton, viscose and polyester run through most labels, so when a brand works only in those we add what sets it apart (“with silk”). Performance means a brand that makes ski or active wear and works mostly in synthetics. Leather-led means at least half the material is leather.

Lenses. Natural-fiber led: at least 85% of the fabric is natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk and wool. Low synthetic: no more than 10% of the fabric is synthetic, stretch included. Synthetic-free: essentially no polyester, nylon or acrylic, and little or no stretch.

Coverage. Some brands only name the fabric when it's a selling point (“crafted from 100% silk”), which makes them look more natural than they are. So the pieces we read stand in for the ones we couldn't, and a brand gets a full breakdown only when its fabric is listed on at least 60% of its range.

What this doesn't measure: how a fiber was grown, dyed or sewn, or who made it. Jewelry, menswear and multi-brand stores are left out. Checked monthly; a brand's numbers change as its range does.

Questions

Natural fibers, explained

Which clothing brands use natural fibers?

Of the 172 clothing brands we measured, 9 are natural-fiber led: at least 85% of the fabric in their pieces is natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk and wool. Choose the natural-fiber led lens in the index to see them.

Which brands don’t use polyester?

4 of the clothing brands we measured are synthetic-free: essentially no polyester, nylon or acrylic, and little or no stretch. 27 keep synthetics to 10% of the fabric or less.

What is a material signature?

A short description of what a brand works in, read from its own fabric labels. When one fiber is at least half the fabric, the brand is led by it, like silk-led. Otherwise it names the fibers the brand uses most, like cotton, cashmere and wool. It describes; it is not a grade of quality, craftsmanship or sustainability.

Is viscose a natural fiber?

Not quite. Viscose, rayon, modal, Tencel (lyocell), cupro and acetate are made from wood pulp, so they are plant-based and not plastic, but they are chemically processed. We count them separately as plant-based.

Does leather count as a natural fiber?

Leather is a natural material, but it isn’t a fiber. Brands whose pieces are mostly leather are described as leather-led. In a mostly fabric range, a leather jacket counts toward the natural share.

Why doesn’t every brand have a full breakdown?

A full breakdown needs the fabric listed on at least 60% of a brand’s pieces. Some brands only list fabric when it is a selling point, which would make them look more natural than they are, so we show those as a partial read. Jewelry, multi-brand stores and brands we couldn’t read are left out.

How often is the Materials Index updated?

Every month. New pieces are read as brands add them, and pieces that leave a brand’s catalog drop out of its numbers.
